A Winter Storm & a Touch of Sass.

We braved the winter storm to give the little one the special day that we had been promising her.
It was so worth it.

but that was yesterday...

Let me tell you a little about today.

I have to say first though, for as much sass this girl of mine can give 
(the build up to Christmas has been horrible, so many expectations and heavy on the sensory overload), 
 it's days like today that I know we must be doing something right.

The first thing I will tell you about is the book tha
t I read to her at bedtime tonight. It was Christmas Trolls by Jan Brett. It's a sweet story where a little girl teaches two trolls about the true meaning of Christmas. She teaches them generosity, sharing, and to show kindness towards others. So I say to S, "See, now don't you think that was a nice story about trolls and how the little girl taught them the true meaning of Christmas?" She says, "Yes, but that's not all Christmas is about." (okay, so now I'm thinking, here we go. Lay it on me kiddo, tell me how Christmas is really about the toys, gifts, and Santa. That's what I was thinking of course, but not what I said...) "Okay, so what do you think Christmas is all about?" S: "Well, the true meaning of Christmas is really all about Baby Jesus. That's what Christmas is suppose to be about." Really? We don't even go to church. (for the record, I'm neither ashamed of that, nor proud) but really, this kid has a way of warming my heart. Giant bursts of love here.

Okay...so here is the second little bit of our day I will share.

I don't know if I have talked about this here before, and I swear I'm not trying to make S out to be some child genius ...but seriously, for a 4yr old her math skills blow my mind. Mostly because I'm legendarily horrible at math and for the most part, my husband is also. So she says to herself tonight "what's 4+2+4+2?" I don't say anything. I do watch her though, and listen. She says quietly to herself, "1 2 3 4, 5 6, 7 8 9 10, 11 12. I got it, It's 12!" I'm not kidding, just like that. No written #'s in front of her, no fingers even. I say, "Honey, that's right. That's really good." She looks at me a bit defeated and says, "yeah but I just count the numbers in my head mom." Like that is not the right way to do it. 
What do I say to that? so I say "Baby, you're doing just fine."
